Therefore, sons Richard, Thomas, John and Edward were probably born in Ireland; Garrett (1765) could have been born either place but probably in Virginia. Hannah and Mary were certainly born in Virginia.
James served in the Revolution as a foot soldier, Private in 7th Virginia Regiment of Foot, commanded by Alexander McClanachan, Esquire.
A James McCalister is listed among those who served in Dunmore’s War, 1774; “A List of John Murray’s Compy. of Volunteers from Botetourt”

Michels’ FGS states “Rev. War under Capt. Gallaway-21st Dist.”

Tyler’s Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Lyon G. Tyler, Vol. III, Richmond, 1922, printed a letter from a James McCalister to Col. James Wood, Commanding at Frederick Town from Martinsburg, dated the 15 Decm. 1780. As the will shows him signing with an “X,” this letter was either written for him or wasn’t from him in the first place.

Dear Coll:
I received your letter with Governor’s Warrant the 23rd. of last month, since which time I have done every thing in my power to answer the trust you was pleased to repose in me. I have collected a good quantity of hay, corn in plenty, flour in abundance, Beef & Pork scarce. I have got about 30 head of cattle and have about 6,000 wt. of beef yet. Shall provide as much more as possible, but I had sent a small drove to the commissary general just before I received your letter. The expectation of the Convention Troops staying here prevented us from sending down the flour we had on hand. Pray let me know if you please, whether I am to expect any troops stationed here this winter, or whether I had better send what flour is on hand to Alexandria. I have stabling for 20 or 30 horses. (turn)
I will be exceeding glad to see you here, and if you can make it convenient should be glad to hear by a letter before, that I might be at home; but should it not be in your way, be so kind as write on the above to
Dear Coll.
Your most obedt. and hum’l. Serv’t,
James McCalister

James McCallister, Sr. (Mary) lived in Augusta, Botetourt and Bath Counties; they are the same area. Botetourt became a county with a slice of Augusta and Bath County was sliced from Botetourt County. James did not move, his plantation simply lay within three different counties as the boundary lines changed.

James was in Captain Galloway’s company, 21st District during the Revolution.

V. JAMES McALLISTER (--1834)
A mystery here: James’s will mentions “my seven children, Thomas, John, Richard, Edward, Garrett, Hana, Mary” and divides estate among them, then mentions “except five shillings which I gave to my son, James...” Was James the black sheep, cut off with a pittance?

Mr McAllister was born in the State of Virginia in the year 1819, came with his parents, William and Belena {Frazier) McAllister, in 1830, at the age of about ten years, and was raised on a farm, which was his delight. She was born in Tennessee in 1821, and was a grand, good woman. She was widely known and unusually liked by all who knew her. The family went to Nebraska in 1884, where they died, Mrs M. THOMAS McALLISTER
Judge Thomas McAllister was born in Mason County, West Virginia, 21 May 1825. His father, William McAllister, was born in Kentucky in 1788, but moved to Virginia in childhood, where he was reared and married. His uife, Bellana Frazier, was a native of Virginia. He held a
commission in the War ol 1812, and held several local offices in his county of trust and profit. The family removed to Indiana in the fall of 1835, and settled in Madison county. There the father died in February, I864, having lived upon the same farm for twenty-nine years. Our subject grew to manhood in Madison county, and received a good common school education. He was there married, in 1849, to Miss Mary J. Poindexter, a native of West Virginia, and daughter of Josephus Poindexter. This lady was born February 12, 1827, and died May 5, 1882.
After his marriage, Thomas farmed in Madison county until 1856, and then removed to Sullivan County, Mo., buying a place slightly improved, upon which he stilI resides. [1895] He now owns 350 acres of land, 300 in the home place, all fenced and improved, and also fifty acres of timber land in another tract. He lives in a good, new house, and is one of the successful and prosperous farmer-citizens of the county. In July, 1861, he enlisted in the Twenty-third Missouri Volunteer Infantry and served his country until being discharged at ATlanta, Georgia, September, 1864. He enlisted as a private, but, before his discharge, had been promoted to Orderly Sergeant. At the battle of Pittsburg Landing he was taken prisoner, and held about six and half months, six weeks being spent at Montgomery, Ala., and the rest of the time at Macon, Ga. He was paroled from there and taken to the hospital at Portsmouth Grove, R. I., where he remained until the spring of 1863. The same year he joined his regiment at Gasconade, Mo., and served in Missouri, chasing "bushwhackers," &c., until the spring of 1864, when he joined Sherman on his march to the sea. Julv 17, 1864, he was wounded in the right shoulder, and taken to the hospital, where he remained until September, when he went to Atlanta. After being mustered out that place he returned home.

Previous to the war the Judge wa~s a Democrat, but since that time he has been identified with the Republican party . His first public office was that of Township Collector. which he filled two terms. The office of Justice of the Peace he has also filled two terms. In the fall of 1878 he was nominated and elected County Judge, the duties of which office he faithfullly discharged one term. In March, 1885, he was married to Margaret Maits, a native of Virginia, and daughter of Dr. Joseph Mairs, formerly of Virginia. He is now holding his second term of Township Trustee in a Democratic townsllip.
The Judge has reared a family of six children : Josephus, married, now living with his family in Milan, county seat of Sullivan, being elected Recorder of Deeds in the Fall of 1894. William, who died in 1883, aged twenty-six years, leaving a family. 'l'homas O., marlied, and living in Ida county, Idaho. Madbum, wife of S. S. Millege; Lois, wife of J. L. Taylor uf Hermann, Oregon; Sydney, wife of W.M. Reger, living in Sullivan County. Judge and wife are members of the M.E. church. The Judge is a member of the Masonic Order.

Harden’s History of Madison County gives the foLlowing sketch of Thomas, Martin Browne, Jr.’s brother-in-law:
“Mr McCallister was born in Mason County, Virginia, in 1796 (sic), came to Madison County in 1830, settled on his farm five miles east of Pendleton and two miles northwest of Markleville. He residsed there until his death which occurred in 1853. Aget 57 years.
Mr McCallister stood high among his fellow-citizens, representing them in the legislature for a period of eleven years, being first elected in 1842. He was also elected to the State Senatew but died before that body convened. He headed a band who went to demand the release of Peter Runnels and others who were in jail at Anderson for mobbing Fred(erick) Douglas, at Pendleton... It was through the influence of Mr McCallister and Mr. Berry that these men were dissuaded from any violence in the matter, indicating that he had great influence over his fellow man.
His religious notions were of the broadest type, embracing the salvation of the whole human family. He was a staunch Democrat and as such was elected to the offices referred to above.. Mr. McCallister raised a large family, the members of which are considerably scattered, the widow having removed to Illinois in 1868. He was a brother to John, William and Garrett and father of J.W. McCallister, present candidate for sheriff
The names of McCallister and Bell are closely connected, both representing the county; both tall, muscular men, but differing in politics. They were pitted against each other for the State senate on the temperance question, Mr. McAllister being on the anti-temperance ticket. He was elected by a majority of 250 over Mr. Bell. Mr. McCallister has a monument erected to mark his resting place occupying the highest point in the cemetery, holdin in death as in life a prominent place. He is buried on his farm and in the cemetery bearing his name, on the bank of Lick Creek in Adams Township.”

History of Madison County (Indiana), Forkner, 1914:
“Among the more prominent families in the county is the one that heads this article. They came from Virginia in an early day and located in the southern part of this county. The family has become numerous, and their representatives may now be found in all parts of the county and numerous other places.
The older set consisted of four brothers, John, Garrett, Thomas and William, all of whom raised families of considerable size. They, in turn, followed the exampke of their parents , complying with the ancient command, ‘thou shalt multiply and replenish the earth,’ and the result is that one has to be better posted than I am on their genealogy to give anything like a full history of the family. I will, therefore, content myself with noticing a few only, who have been more or less connected with the public. If I should overlook any it will be attributed, I hope, to a want of a better knowledge of the family rather than to aby interest in not recording what may seem an oversight.
The first we will notice is John, who located ih the southern part of Fall Creek Township, and owned a fine farm there. He was a county commissioner and served acceptably. He moved to Anderson and died there in 1858. among his children we will notice James, of Lafayette Township, Mrs. John Hunt, of Spiceland, Augustus C., of Anderson and John, whose locality is unknown.
Secondly we will notice Garrett, who settled one mile west of New Columbus, on the north side of the road leading to Pendleton. He was a low, heavy set man of fair complexion. He died in the year 1854. His wife died a few years later.
Among his children are Joel Clark, deceased, James, Lorenzo D., Corydon), Calvin, and William Monroe .
The next we will notice is the family of Thomas. A full account of himself will be given in another place. Among his children are John W.. Garrett, Martin, Robert, Mrs. John and Weston Somerville, Clifton and Dewitt Clinton
The next we will notice is William, who lived two miles southwest of New Columbus where he owned a fine farm. He was a large man, full six feet high, and of fair complex.ion. he removed to Columbus and died there in 1868. Among his children we find Garrett, whose wife was the daughter of James P. Irish. Garrett died on his farm midway between Pendleton and Markleville in 1860. .John, his brother, lives just north of the farm described, in the edge of Adams township. He has served. as County Commissioner, and is at this writing, candidate for sheriff on what is known as the People's ticket. The old set, that is the four brothers and their wives, are all dead with the exception of Thomas’s widow who lives in Illinois..
The McAllister family are noted for their hospitality. I could .gladly give a further sketch of this family, but believing this in fairness sufficient I will not pursue the genealogy any further. The final resting places of the older brothers are as follows: John at Anderson, Thomas at McCallister cemetery Garrett and William at New Columbus each by the side of their companions with the exception of Thomas and John who yet survive.”

The McAllister family in the main are, or were, Democrats and Universalists. A grand family, of high social sytanding, and I am glad to write about them as one of the pioneer families of Madison County.
Among the more prominent of the McAllister families have been Thomas and John, sons of William, the former judge of the court in Missouri, and the latter commissioner of Madison County for many years. John W., son of Thomas, was sheriff of Madison County several years; Lorenzo D., son of Garrett, was captain of Company K, 8th Indiana Volunteers, during the 3war of 1861-65; Augustus C., son of John, was for several years a successful attorney at the Anderson bar, he died just in his prime in Memphis, Tennessee, about the year 1881. Austin W., son of Garrett Jr., has been county assassor for several years, born in 1855. Those in the army were Lorenzo D., Robert, Clifton and Charles. Dr. Martin Brown, a well-known doctor in Madison County, lives in Summitville; Garrett W., formerly a druggist in Anderson (deceased); Ward Roach, an attorney in Franklin, Indiana.”
